Why is it so difficult to apologize?

We have been trying to teach our son to say he’s sorry. It hasn’t been going that well. It’s been frustrating for us, and him. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t understand the concept yet.

The funny thing is, it doesn’t get easier as you grow up. It’s still hard to apologize. It’s hard to admit when you’re wrong. It’s hard to admit fault. It’s hard to let down your guard and be vulnerable. Even, and maybe especially, when it’s someone you love. Why?
