Water Heater

I received the following text messages upon getting off the train this morning.

Hot water is gone!

Hot water heater!

Under normal circumstances, these words should send anyone in a panic. However, in my case, I had the knowledge that I had just taken our old water heater to the curb for pickup. It was a task that had been a long time coming. We had to call a week ago to arrange for the pickup. And, for that entire week the water heater had been sitting in our driveway while our house was being painted. Prior to that, the water heater had been sitting on the side of our house for months where I saw it almost every day.

I was fully aware of our old water heater… and yet, these words sent me into a panic.

I had visions of our current water heater exploding and leaking everywhere.

I was trying to decide if I should just turn around and catch the next train home, or if I should go into the office first. It was a few minutes before I even realized that there was a possibility that the texts meant that the old water heater had been picked up and was gone.

How oblivious and absent minded can I be?
