According to fypower.org the California Independent System Operator has declared a Flex Alert for July 8 through July 10. They expect to see the highest energy demand for the summer this week, especially from 3 to 6 PM.
I have no problem conserving power, and I think it's something we should do on a regular basis, but I don't really understand why, or how, we can use significantly more power during a heat wave. And I don't understand why, or how, our system is unable to handle the power demands during such a time. I'll admit to not fully understanding it all, but wouldn't you think a place in the United States, like California, would be immune to these issues?
