I happened upon something interesting this morning. For the first time I decided to stop at a McDonalds near my office for breakfast on my way in. I love McDonald’s breakfasts and have them probably more often than I should, but I have never actually been inside the McDonalds by my office. So, I walked up to the counter and ordered my number 4, bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit combo, with coffee and it was then that I noticed something odd on the menu. There was a picture of a latte. But, it wasn’t just a latte, there was also a cappuccino, and some iced coffee drinks. It was then that I looked down on the counter and there was a menu there too featuring 4 or 5 coffee drinks and the logo “McCafe”. I had never heard of “McCafe” before so I grabbed my food and headed into work to feed my curiosity as I fed my stomach with breakfasty goodness.

As near as I can tell, “McCafe” has actually been around for a little while in other countries. I found a McDonalds website for Ireland referring to the “McCafe” and it seems like it is actually its own little restaurant featuring coffees, pastries, pannis, and other such things. I wonder if McDonalds is starting to test the market here in the US for similar restaurants. Maybe what I saw this morning is just the beginning of another coffee revolution. The question is, with all the other coffee shops, is there room for another? And furthermore, will people really be interested in going to McDonalds for gourmet coffee drinks? I guess we will have to wait and see. Personally, I think it would be cool to have a “McCafe” restaurant in my neighborhood.
