Mother’s Day

Happy Mother’s Day! If you find yourself just now realizing that today is the day set aside to honor mothers, I suggest you start thinking about how you are going to convince your mother, wife, grandmother, etc. that you have not, in fact, forgotten. Truth be told, we should honor these wonderful people every day of our lives and not just wait around for one particular Sunday in May; but, that does not excuse you from missing the opportunity you have today.

If you recall, God’s fifth commandment (Exodus 20:12), brought down from Mount Sinai by Moses, instructed the Israelites to honor their fathers and their mothers. Jesus confirmed the importance of this commandment when he informed the “Rich Young Man” (Matthew 19: 16 – 22) that he must keep the commandments, including the one about honoring your father and mother, to obtain eternal life.

With just these two particular passages in mind we cannot argue that honoring one’s mother is unimportant. In fact, I think it gives us all the more reason to honor them each and every day. So, my challenge to you, young and old alike, is to think of ways you can honor your mother, and all mothers, every day, and in particular this day: Mother’s Day.
