Eucharist

Coming from the Church of Christ we don’t use fancy words like Eucharist. I would be willing to bet that a large portion of my small church’s membership has never even come across that word. And so, Sunday, during my communion devotional I planned to inform the whole congregation of the wonders of the word and its meaning. A month or two ago I attempted something similar, informing the congregation of my recent discovery of the Jewish practice of Tashlikh. It had been met with decent results, and so I was encouraged to continue with my informative theme. But just to be safe, I consulted with a close friend, and after receiving his praises, I was ready to go.

Saturday night, as I was beginning to form my ideas into a coherent thought, I started to second guess my plan. Was this really what I should be talking about? Do I want to be thought of as that guy who talks about the religious traditions of other “faiths?” After consulting with my conscience, my wife, I decided that a devotional about the Eucharist wasn’t quite what the church needed to hear. I think sometimes I forget that others may not want the same things I do.
