90210 (Spoiler Alert)

Spoiler Alert! If you haven’t watched last night’s episode of 90210 read no futher.
I cannot believe it. Last night’s episode of the new 90210 revealed a secret that I thought they’d hold onto for a long time.
In the series premier we learned that Kelly Taylor had a son with one of the guys from the original series. And, for the past few weeks they had been dropping hints about the father’s identity. Even though I thought it would be really odd, I had my money on Steve Sanders for the father.
Well, it turned out I was wrong. In true 90210-style, it was Brenda who revealed to us the identity of Sammy’s father. The secret came out when Brenda accused Kelly never getting over Sammy’s father, Dylan. Sounds a little too much like the original BH 90210 doesn’t it? I thought so.
I was a little disappointed that the father of Kelly’s child was Dylan, but I have to admit that it makes the most sense in keeping with the BH 90210 mythos. Who else could come and go in Kelly’s life so easily? The other two guys would have probably stuck around if a child had been involved.
Now, with that revealed, the only real surprise will be if we see Dylan in this series.
Fringe

So, did you watch Fringe last night? What did you think? I thought it was rather enjoyable, but not quite as good as I had hoped. The previews for next week looked better though. I think it may take an episode or two for this show to really hit its grove. I’ll watch again.
My feelings about the show's slow start aside, there were a couple funny, J.J. Abrams, moments that I wanted to point out. Did you catch the advertisement for Massive Dynamic following the show? Yes, J.J. is at it again with his fake commercials. There’s also a website. I like it. Also, did you notice the music throughout the show was oddly similar to the music in Lost? And finally, isn’t it funny that the opening of this show featured an airplane related incident?

So, I’m sure you’ve all been wondering. Did he or didn’t he? Well, the answer is yes, yes I did. I did watch two hours of the new 90210 on the CW this week. Did I enjoy it? Yes. Was it good TV? No.
As you can probably guess I’m a sucker for that type show. It stems back to my Saved By the Bell obsession as a child and moved through my Beverly Hills 90210 obsession as a teen and my OC obsession as a 20-something.
I haven’t been able to get into a show of this variety since the end of the OC, mostly because of my busy schedule, but this one seems to have come around at the right time. Plus it’s based on one of my favorite shows of the past.
The premier had it’s share of cameos from the original cast. Kelly’s a main character, Brenda stopped in for an, I can only guess, prolonged visit, Brandon was mentioned by name, and Kelly’s mother was shown in a preview for next week’s exciting episode.
On top of the cameos, many of the shows new characters are actually relatives of the original characters. There’s Kelly’s little sister, and Andrea’s daughter to name a few. I have to admit it was fun to make all of the connections. I worry though, that it might get old pretty quick.
The show itself was the typical high school drama, nothing groundbreaking or terribly exciting, and yet it was entertaining enough to keep me on the couch. I don’t predict a long run for 90210 this time around. While I enjoyed it, I don’t think it had enough to set it apart from the other shows in its genre. I hope I’m wrong. I’d like to see where the writers plan to take it, I’m just not sure it’ll get there.
