Support Your Local NonProfit

December 11th, 2008 § 1 Comment

Looking for something a little different this Christmas? Why not try supporting your local non-profit? It’s a tough fundraising year and organizations that rely on support from individuals to meet their budgetary needs are suffering right now. So, instead of giving that $50 Target gift card to your cousin, why not make a $50 donation in their name and give them a nice greeting card instead?

Here are a few local non-profits you might consider supporting if you’re in the Los Angeles area.

And, here’s a list of internationally reaching organizations that a friend of mine compiled in honor of the season.

Advent Conspiracy

December 10th, 2008 § 1 Comment

Have you heard of Advent Conspiracy? It’s an interesting movement focused on bringing the focus of Christmas back to Christ. It was started by five pastors who were looking for a way to revolutionize Christmas and it’s been spreading since it’s inception in 2006. The underlying concept behind it is Worship Fully, Spend Less, Give More, Love All.

If you are looking to make this Christmas a little different I encourage you to check it out for yourself.

Extended Weekend Update

December 3rd, 2008 § 2 Comments

My boss was kind enough to allow me to extend my holiday weekend one extra day, so my weekend was from Wednesday though Sunday.  Now that’s what I call a weekend.
Wednesday
Ahh, a day off.  Erin and I ran around town taking care of a few errands in the rain before we headed down to my parents for a little Thanksgiving/Birthday meal.
Every year for the last several years my brother, Greg, and I have celebrated our birthday’s with the family the day before Thanksgiving.  It’s become a nice little tradition that I’ve grown to really love.  Not only do I get to have my mom’s turkey dinner for my birthday, but it makes it easier to split up the holiday with the in-laws.
Thursday
Happy Birthday to me!  After sleeping in a little, I opened my present from Erin before it was time to head over to the in-laws for Thanksgiving preparation and celebration. My present from Erin was a pair of the beauties you see above.  They are Rainbow Mocca Loafs.  Perfect for the Rainbow Sandal lover in all.  Now I can, truely wear Rainbows year-round.
The rest of the day was full of eating, football and a little Rook.
Friday
Erin and I ran a few errands before heading out to Long Beach for a friend’s wedding.  We had a great time.
Saturday
We spent almost the entire day searching for Christmas lights for our house.  They have to be just perfect, you know.
After our long day of shopping we sat down to watch some TV and discovered that we had HBO for free all weekend.  That night we watch 8 of 10 episodes of HBO’s True Blood series.  I won’t recommend the show to anyone, because of it’s graphic content, but we were hooked by the story line.
Sunday
Went to Church, mowed the lawn, and hung Christmas lights on half the house before we went off to Group.
For group we wondered around the Americana in Glendale and saw the (fake) snow. It was pretty.
We spent the rest of the evening watching the remaining two episodes of True Blood and went to bed.

Happy Rosh Hashanah

September 30th, 2008 § 2 Comments

It’s hard to believe but three years ago I wrote this post in honor of Rosh Hashanah.  A few days later I gave my famous Tashlikh Communion Devotional, in which I asked the congregation to symbolically cast their sins off in the the water (Micah 7:18-20) as is the Jewish practice.  It seemed like a good idea at the time, but it was unfortunately met with little enthusiasm and caused a few to wonder who this heretic giving the communion devotional was. Looking back, it still seems like it was a good idea, but what can you do.
Today, in honor of Rosh Hashanah, whether your a Jew, Christian, Muslim, or whatever, I encourage you to take some time and think about last year’s failings, shortcomings and sins.  After you’ve done that cast them aside and ask for forgiveness.  I’m sure you’ll feel much better about yourself.
