The Battle of the Regional Airports

November 5th, 2008 § Leave a Comment

Living in close proximity to the Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, I pay reasonably close attention to news involving the airport. Here’s the latest news.

The battle of the regional airports continues…

Last I had heard, the Van Nuys Airport wasn’t very happy with Bob Hope Airport’s attempts to put in effect a night-time curfew that would shift some flights to Van Nuys. I had no idea that they too were working on their own proposal. Apparently, under their plan some of their noisiest day-time flights would shift to Bob Hope, as I just read in a LA Times article from yesterday.

It seems as though there is a not-so-funny game of cat and mouse going on between the two airports. I wonder who will win in the end. I know what I’d like to see, although it wouldn’t be very fair to one airport in particular.

Pumpkin Pancake Breakfast

Today, in the break room at work, I noticed a flier promoting the St. Mark’s Pancake Breakfast which benefits the San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity and Burbank Kiwanis for Fun. Since I try to promote local events on my blog, I thought I’d share this one with you, my readers. The breakfast will be held on November 15th from 8 AM to 11 AM at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Glendale. There is a suggested donation of $6 per person.
Oh, and did I mention they’ll be serving pumpkin pancakes?

Burbank’s Winter Shelter

October 28th, 2008 § Leave a Comment

Tonight, among other topics, the Burbank City Council will discuss the 2008-2009 Homeless Winter Shelter Program.
Last year the city of Burbank agreed to host the shelter at its Armory because the city of Glendale, who had previously hosted the shelter, was renovating their Armory. This year, the city of Glendale has revealed that they are not interested in reopening their Armory for use by the Winter Shelter Program placing the load again on Burbank.
Living really close to the armory, I received a letter from the city notifying me of tonight’s meeting. And, last night, while working on my car, I was approached by a neighbor who was passing out material in opposition to the proposed shelter.
Judging from the literature I received, I think there is some misinformation about this shelter floating around. I encourage you, if you’re concerned, to read the Staff Report and its supporting documents. If that doesn’t satisfy you, attend tonight’s meeting at 6 PM at Burbank City Hall.

Blog Action Day: Get Involved

If you live in the Burbank/Glendale area and are looking to help out those affected by poverty check out one of these fine organizations.  I’ve had experience with each of them.
If you don’t live in the area check out Network for Good, where you can search for charities local to you.

The Burbank Collection

As The Burbank Collection is finally nearing completion I am growing more and more curious about what retailers will be moving in.  I found floor plan at the project’s website.
I knew that Barney’s Beanery was coming, as well as Pinkberry, Sketchers and Johnny Rockets, but I didn’t realize American Apparel was coming to take the place of the discount bookstore/Halloween store next to the theater.
It’ll be interesting to see how the place takes shape over the next few months.  According to that floor plan, there are a lot of spaces still for lease.  I hope they get filled.

Where Am I?
